Our Mission
The Desert Empire Filmmaker Foundation (DEFF) uplifts filmmakers from the Inland
Empire by providing resources, mentorship, and a creative community. We
strengthen our region’s storytelling culture by fostering connections between
filmmakers, local vendors, and industry professionals, empowering a new
generation of voices to thrive outside traditional film hubs.
Who We Are
We are a collective of passionate, award-winning filmmakers based in the Inland Empire. Founded by indie filmmakers Cindy and Casey Ball, the Desert Empire Filmmaker Foundation (DEFF) exists to uplift and empower local storytellers by breaking down barriers that have long kept resources, opportunities, and visibility out of reach for our region.
From San Bernardino County to Riverside County, our team is dedicated to nurturing the creative potential that exists right here in our own communities. Whether it’s funding, equipment, mentorship, or simply a seat at the table, we’re here to make sure Inland creatives don’t get left behind. We believe the Inland Empire is more than a backdrop—it’s a cinematic force ready to shine.
Who We Serve
We serve filmmakers and visual storytellers from across the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley who are ready to take their work to the next level—but lack access to the tools, connections, or support found in larger markets like Los Angeles.
Whether you’re a student making your first short film, a working-class parent pursuing a creative dream, or a crew member looking for hands-on experience—we see you, and we’ve built this foundation for you. DEFF is especially passionate about supporting underrepresented voices, emerging talent, and those committed to telling authentic, locally-rooted stories.
